Neglected and Growing

It's been neat to see how things that are sorely neglected just continue to grow in my garden. Everything you see pictured here was planted 6+ years ago. Every year this little herb and flower garden gets overwhelmed with weeds, and I've split up that spread of oregano more than once. Actually, last year, I was sure that I'd killed it, so I'm happy to see it back and sprawled out again this spring.

I sprang from a long line of gardeners and green thumbs, and I'm not horrible at keeping plants alive, but it's not my strong suit. I'm pretty sure the casualties of the plants left in my overly-watchful wake died because I was too…. aware of them.

Do y'all need water?
How about some fertilizer?
I bet you'll like this blazing 200-degree sunlight.
I bet you'll like how dark and musty it is down in this basement.
Oh, God. Why are your leaves brown?
Wait. DON'T DIE! I'M SORRY.
::bailing water out of the planter::

The things that have done the best for me are the things that I've pretty much ignored. I literally did nothing to that oregano plant except for put it into the ground and wish it the best of luck.

Right now I have several trays of vegetable seedlings that I'm impatiently waiting to see germinate so that I can plant them in the garden, and I really am doing my best to just let them do their thang. But the backdoor window pane is smudged with my nose prints from peeking on their progress once… twice… three times a day.

Y'ALL DOIN OK?
WHATCHY'ALL NEED?
Ooooo, Basil, baby I see you growwwwwin.

Just step away, Bull, and put DOWN the water hose.

I'm sure there's some kind of lesson to be learned here.
